How to Categorize Transactions
Clear your category queue, correct misclassifications, and keep your data accurate.
TL;DR
Accurate categories make every Jijenga intelligence product more accurate. The QUEUE tab in Categories shows everything that needs your attention after each import.
Why this matters
Every number in your Operating Statement, Velocity Lab, and Monthly Brief comes from categorised transactions. A transaction in the wrong category produces a wrong number — everywhere. Keeping your categories clean is the single highest-leverage thing you can do in Jijenga.
Clear the queue after every import
Tap CATEGORY in the bottom navigation
After importing a statement, tap the CATEGORY tab. The QUEUE badge shows how many transactions need attention.
Open the QUEUE tab
Tap QUEUE to see all transactions awaiting categorisation — ones Jijenga couldn't classify confidently, or ones that need your review.
Tap a transaction
Open any transaction in the queue to review the counterparty name and amount.
Assign the correct category
Select the right bucket and sub-bucket. Jijenga remembers your correction — the same counterparty will be classified correctly on every future import.
Repeat until the queue is empty
Work through all pending transactions. All intelligence products update immediately as you correct each one — no refresh needed.
Correct a transaction from the Ledger
You can also correct any transaction directly from the Ledger, not just from the queue:
Open the Ledger
Tap LEDGER in the bottom navigation bar.
Find the transaction
Use the type filters (EXPENSE, INCOME, INVESTMENT, TRANSFER) or search to locate the transaction.
Tap the transaction to open it
The detail view shows the current category and all transaction data.
Correct the category
Tap the category to change it. Select the correct bucket and sub-bucket. The correction applies immediately.
Troubleshooting
A merchant keeps appearing in the queue after every import? The counterparty name may vary slightly between transactions (e.g. spacing or formatting differences). Correct each instance manually — Jijenga learns the pattern over multiple corrections.
The right category doesn't exist? Select the closest available category for now. Contact Jijenga support via the in-app comms if you need a category added.
