How Jijenga Works

From M-Pesa PDF to financial intelligence — the full pipeline in plain language.

TL;DR

Upload a PDF. Jijenga parses it, classifies every transaction, and activates your intelligence tools — automatically. Here's what happens at each step.

The pipeline: PDF in, intelligence out

1

Download your M-Pesa statement

Safaricom generates a PDF record of your M-Pesa transaction history. You can request it via the MySafaricom app (M-Pesa → Statement) or via USSD at *334#. The statement covers up to 6 months of transactions.

2

Upload it to Jijenga

Tap the import button in the app and upload your PDF. The file is transmitted encrypted and deleted from our servers immediately after processing. We never store your raw PDF.

3

TransactionForge parses every line

Jijenga's PDF parser (TransactionForge) reads the statement and extracts every transaction: date, amount, counterparty, transaction type, and running balance. It handles Safaricom's PDF format automatically — including older statement layouts.

4

Bucketeer classifies each transaction

Every transaction goes through Bucketeer, Jijenga's AI classification engine. It reads the counterparty name and transaction context, then assigns a category: Food & Groceries, Transport, Airtime & Data, Rent & Housing, Business Income, Fuliza, and more.

If a classification is wrong, you can override it with a tap. Your correction is remembered for future imports.

5

Your intelligence tools update

Once classified, all Jijenga features refresh automatically. Operating Statement, Velocity Lab, Flow Explorer, Fuliza Shield, Monthly Brief, and Savings Goals all reflect your latest data — no manual refresh needed.

Uploading again

You can upload new statements at any time — monthly, quarterly, or whenever you want fresh data. Jijenga deduplicates transactions across imports, so overlapping date ranges won't create double-counting.

Manual entry

No PDF? You can add transactions manually from within the app. They go through the same classification engine and appear in all your intelligence tools the same way as imported transactions.
